As a general rule, we hire one to three students per year. Most are chosen during the traditional second year winter recruitment drive, although we are pleased to meet interesting "late" candidates. We have often found that the best candidates are not necessarily those who have chosen to follow the straight and narrow.

As is the case with most other firms, we make our initial selections based on the c.v.’s we receive.

In fact, we receive approximately 300 c.v.’s per year! Anything "different" that a candidate may have done is bound to get our attention first: travelling in exotic places, unusual jobs, activities out of the ordinary, etc. Then we look for indications that the candidate has shown initiative, is open minded, etc.

We also look at academic results. After all, we do want the most competent people to advise our clients and marks are the only objective criterion to guide us. However, contrary to other firms, we do not have predetermined minimum thresholds. You will understand, however, that those whose results are below average must have other exceptional features to convince us to grant them an interview!

Young associates of the firm conduct the first-round interviews with approximately 40 chosen candidates. Once you have reached this stage, academic results are no longer of major importance. Your c.v. got you in the door, and now we want to see how you express yourself and whether you can hold our attention with coherent and interesting conversation.

If our interviewers are convinced that the candidate should be hired, they recommend the candidate for a second interview. During these second-round interviews, candidates have the opportunity to meet with partners of the firm. At the end of this process, you will have met five or six attorneys of our firm, which will give you a better idea of the working environment and personality of Spiegel Sohmer.

The selection process allows us to determine if you have the necessary talent, enthusiasm and confidence and if you are the type of person who would be happy as part of our team. The interviews are also a chance for you to show the different aspects of your personality and to see the type of people who work at Spiegel Sohmer.
