Q. Do You Hire all Your Students at the End of Their Articling Period?

A. That is definitely our goal. We are proud to be able to offer a position to most of our articling students. You will understand that with only one or two students per year, any hireback percentage would be misleading.

Our articling program has, however, been our main source of growth during the last few years.

Q. How Many Years of Practice are Required to Become a Partner?

A. There is no set mathematical formula. At Spiegel Sohmer, partnership is determined based on three main criteria: mastery of a specific field of law, billable hours consistently in excess of the norm and volume of business brought to the firm. In most cases, more than one criterion has contributed to partnership.

Q. With a Name Like Yours, Are There any Francophones in Your Office?

A. Of course! There are 13 francophone attorneys out of a total of 28. All of the other attorneys speak French, in some cases better than the francophones.

Q. How important is it to master the French language to work at Spiegel Sohmer?

A. In Quebec, while the courts are bilingual, the language of litigation is primarily French. Therefore, if you are considering practicing in this domain, you will have to be comfortable speaking and reading French. Do not worry if you are not there yet as long as you have the commitment to do what it takes. In any event, no matter which type of law you want to do, bilingualism will always be an assets.

Q. Can Students Work Part-time During Their Academic Year?

A. Of course, it helps us tremendously.

Q. To Whom do I Send my C.V.?

A. Please send your letter of introduction, your c.v. and a copy of your most recent transcript to:
