The Interview

If you list specific interests in your c.v., you should be ready to answer questions on the subject. For example, if you indicate that you like to read, you may be asked for your comments on the last book you read. Would you know what to answer?

95% of all interviewers will ask you why you want to be an attorney. 95% of all candidates recite a variation of the same answer. Could you impress them with an original answer?

You should be prepared to answer the following types of questions:

  • to what do you attribute your academic successes (or failures)?
  • what was your favourite class or who was your favourite professor and why?
  • what field of law are you most interested in?

Be careful! Being prepared does not mean memorizing the answers. Interviewers are bored by those who recite prepared answers. That is certainly not the effect you want to have! Establish the main points and then improvise.

Read the newspaper. We may very well ask you questions on current events (especially if your resume is lacking in matters for discussion).

P.S.: The answers to these questions are of little importance. We want to see how you express yourself and whether you are able to defend a point of view in a coherent manner.

Prepare questions for the attorneys who will interview you. Do not hesitate to ask questions on matters that interest you: salary, work load, type of clientele, procedure for assigning work, etc.

Your interviewers will be impressed if you have done some research on the firm, so that your questions are pertinent and specific.

Your physical appearance shows the importance you place on the interview. However, we do not expect you to be a paragon of fashion.

One final piece of advice. If you go through many interviews, you will likely become more at ease as time goes by. However, after a few, you will have the feeling that you are repeating the same answers and information over and over, and you may find it difficult to maintain your enthusiasm. Do not forget that this is a very important step in your career. Be as ready as possible because no matter what you hear, it is always more difficult to find a job later on …
