The way we recruit future lawyers.
Because we refuse to be restricted to the standard rules of practice!
Although we do not actively recruit all year long, we never refuse good candidates, under any circumstances.
In 2003, we hired Olivier Fournier, a first-year student at the University of Ottawa, because he succeeded in convincing us, at Careers Day, that he would make a great addition to our team.
Geneviève McSween began working with us halfway through her “stage”. She had been assigned mundane tasks elsewhere and made a great impression during her interview.
Pierre-Philippe Taché, Alwynn Gillett and Alexandre Dufresne were not hired during the “usual” second-year recruiting period, but during the course of various scholastic years, each for reasons particular to his or her choice of academic or career path. You would be surprised to know how many other firms simply refused to even consider their applications.
Ed Robert (who was recently admitted to the Bar) initially made the mistake of choosing another firm for his “stage”. A few months later, he called us after the firm he chose ceased to exist. Our response? “Although we are no longer looking for anyone, if you were good then, you must be good now. You're in!”.
Spiegel Sohmer does not recruit solely on the basis of academic results. We are looking for the best, and that is not necessarily the same thing…
We simply do not do things like everyone else!
